DECOMPRESSED 027: BECKY CLOONAN ON BY CHANCE OR PROVIDENCE
For your Sunday Listening Pleasure: Kieron and I talk some serious comic business, about mini comics and self publishing and my upcoming GN By Chance or Providence. Whee!
Where I talk to Becky Cloonan and wrestle with iffy recording.
Hello there! I'm an aspiring artist and I'm interested in working in comics. Maybe even work on the TMNT comics one day! Do you think you could share the path you took to be a comic artist? And how you reached where you are now?
hi! my path is pretty dull, i wish i had an awesome interesting story to tell you with lots of insight, but i don’t. i showed my work to Oni Press while i was in college, they liked it, and it took them a 2 or 3 years to give me any work but they eventually did. it was really small stuff but it was a start, and then after that i did a bigger book for them, and then finally they agreed to publish my own comic. so that was my start, but i was only able to start doing it full-time thanks to my friend beckycloonan who recommended me to Tokyopop, and then later thanks to royalboiler who got me hooked up with Vertigo and then Image.
so the lesson here is make lots of friends who are more charming than yourself and cooler than you are, because then they’ll hook you up. ;D
but keep in mind, i’m also kind of an old-timer, and i think comics is a bit different now from when i was getting started so that isn’t the only option anymore. nowadays not everyone needs to (or wants to, or should XD) bother with gatekeeping publishers anymore, there are more and more people publishing their work themselves on the internet and some even make great money on it. if that’s what you’re interested in, assuming you want to make comics a full-time thing. if not, that’s cool too, then just make comics and you’re good to go.
The sexism is flat out awful. The book itself is boring. But please, reconsider the idea that stories that can be diagrammed are sucking by default; whether you are writer or reader, so many things are so better communicated when they can be mapped well - most notably, timelines. Granted, if you are only going by the charts and not reading the elements that breathe life into a story, sure, you're missing out - but, I don't think the beauty of the leaves make the roots any less interesting. :3
i’ve never read the book, i just know a little from hearsay or whatever.
that’s not really what i meant about the chart/diagram thing, i wasn’t really clear, sorry. i didn’t mean that ALL story charts are bad, you can pretty much break any story, even abstract narratives, into some kind of outline (i write outlines for my own stories, even), but what i meant by diagram or chart is in the way that something like the hero’s journey has been turned into an instructional story diagram. i find that really boring. it’s fine if people want to write that way, it’s just not for me.
